LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Junior Lindsay Heimrich threw a three-hit shutout as the Bowling Green State University softball team recorded a 2-0 win over the University of Minnesota Friday (March 11). The win was part of second-day action at the Eller Media Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
In the Falcons' second game of the day, MAC foe Miami scored a pair of unearned runs en route to a 3-1 victory over the Brown and Orange. BGSU is now 2-12 on the season.
Falcon freshmen scored both runs in the Minnesota game. Allison Vallas had two of the team's seven hits and scored a run, while classmate D.J. DeLong had a hit and a run scored.
The Falcons got the only run Heimrich would need in the top of the third inning. DeLong led off with a single through the right side, and took second on sophomore Jeanine Baca's sacrifice bunt. One out later, junior Gina Rango came through with a single to center that plated DeLong.
BG doubled the lead in the fourth inning. Vallas singled up the middle with one out, and freshman Brecken Libbe had a single of her own with two outs. On Libbe's hit, Vallas came all the way around to score on an error by the Gopher rightfielder.
Those runs were more than enough, as Heimrich was cruising. The junior retired the first 11 batters before surrendering an infield single with two outs in the fourth. She did not walk a batter, and allowed only one runner as far as second base. Heimrich struck out two hitters in her complete-game win.
Minnesota dropped to 11-10 on the season with the loss to the Falcons.
In the second game, Miami got just five hits, but benefitted from several BG errors in the win. The RedHawks got on the board in the top of the first on a BG miscue that allowed Halle Popson to score.
In the bottom of the first inning, though, Baca had a leadoff single, and eventually scored on a hit by Vallas.
Miami threatened against freshman hurler Emily Gouge in the third inning, but could not score. The 'Hawks loaded the bases with no outs, on an infield error, a hit-by-pitch and a walk. Gouge, however, got a grounder back to the circle, and threw home to force the runner.
Then, another grounder back to Gouge resulted in an inning-ending, 1-2-3 double play, as the freshman threw to catcher Abby Habicht, who relayed to first baseman Heimrich to end the threat.
BG was not so lucky in the fifth, however, as the RedHawks scored an unearned run against senior relief pitcher Kristen Anderson. Popson reached on a throwing error and scored on Jackie Poggendorf's double.
Miami added an insurance run off Lauren Hoffman in the seventh inning, as Bianca Paz singled to score Popson.
Poggendorf picked up the complete-game win for the RedHawks, allowing one run and four hits. She walked three batters and struck out 10.
Gouge allowed only two hits and an unearned run in her four innings of work. Anderson took the loss despite surrendering only one hit and a single unearned run in two innings. Both Gouge and Anderson walked two RedHawks, with Anderson striking out two as well.
Hoffman, making her collegiate pitching debut, gave up a run and two hits in the seventh.
All five Miami hits came from the top-three players in the lineup, as Popson and Paz had two each and Poggendorf one. Popson scored all three MU runs in the game.
BG's four hits came from four different players -- Baca, Heimrich, Rango and Vallas. Rango's hit was a two-out triple in the third inning.
BGSU continues play at UNLV with two Saturday (March 12) night games against some formidable competition. The Falcons will face New Mexico State before taking on the number-one team in the nation, Arizona.
