CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Keli Harrell threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout to lead East Carolina University to a 4-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University softball team Sunday afternoon (March 20). The game, a championship-round contest in the Hoo's Who Tournament, was held at The Park.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 7-15 on the season. ECU, after going on to defeat Toledo in Sunday's championship final, is now 36-8 this year.
Harrell struck out 11 Falcon hitters en route to her 19th complete game and sixth shutout of the season.
The game was scoreless until Krista Jessup's RBI single in the fifth. Jessup also had a two-run hit in the seventh inning for some insurance.
Neither team advanced a runner past second base until the Falcon half of the fourth inning. Senior Kristen Anderson, who had two of BG's three hits in the game, led off with a single, and junior Lindsay Heimrich's base hit advanced Anderson to second base.
Freshman Allison Vallas grounded out, with the runners each moving up a base. But, Harrell worked out of the jam, with a grounder and a strikeout, and the game remained scoreless.
It wasn't scoreless for long, however, as a BG fielding error, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout put a runner on third with two outs. Jessup came through with an RBI single to give the Pirates the lead for good.
In the seventh, East Carolina played some 'small ball' to get a rally started. Alison Monce led off with an infield hit, and Shirley Burleson followed with a bunt single. Another infield hit loaded the bases, before Jessup's single to center scored a pair of teammates.
One out later, Leigh Savoy singled to score the game's final run.
That was more than enough scoring for Harrell. Heimrich took the loss for the Falcons, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs in her complete-game effort. She walked one batter and had three strikeouts.
Jessup was 3-for-4 in the game, with three of the team's four RBI, while Mandi Nichols had a pair of hits.
The Falcons now return north, with BGSU slated to begin both the home and the Mid-American Conference portions of the schedule with a Friday (March 25) doubleheader vs. Toledo.
