Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green plated a season-high 16 runs, including 12 in the first three innings, to defeat visiting Toledo on Friday afternoon, 16-2. Junior Nolan Reimold was responsible for half of the Falcons' offense, tying a school record with eight runs-batted-in.
Reimold put BGSU on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run blast to center field. Eric Lawson had led off the game with a single.
BGSU then plated five runs in both the second and third innings for a 12-0 lead. In the second, Kevin Longstreth, Lawson, and Josh Stewart had RBI-hits, Reimold walked with the bases loaded, and Kurt Wells hit a sacrifice fly for a 7-0 Falcon lead.
In the third inning Andy Hudak received a two-out, bases-loaded walk before Reimold came to the plate and hit a grand slam, again to center field. It was Reimold's 16th homer of the season and gave him seven RBIs in the first three innings.
UT (14-33, 4-13) broke into the scoring column in the top of the fifth inning thanks to solo home run by pinch-hitting Travis Pilewski and a RBI-single by Joel Visser. That would be the only scoring the Rockets would muster.
Falcon starter Alan Brech (7-1) went six innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Freshman Nick Cantrell entered in the seventh inning and picked up his first career save by pitching the final three innings. Cantrell gave up just two hits with one walk.
BGSU resumed its scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs on a Wells fielder's choice and a Warnock single for a 14-2 advantage. In the seventh inning Reimold hit what should have been a groundout to the third baseman for the first out. Brian Sanders' throw was high to first base and sailed into the Falcons' dugout, scoring Steve Raszka from third base and Hudak from second base. Raszka would have scored on the play, giving Reimold his eighth RBI of the game.
BGSU held just a 13-11 advantage in hits for the game while stranding six runners. UT left 10 on base. Nick Szczur (5-6) took the loss for the Rockets.
The Falcons improve to 29-14 overall and 9-7 in the MAC West Division. The two teams meet again on Saturday, May 14, at 1 p.m. at Steller Field.
BGSU Notes... • Prior to Saturday's game, the 1995 BGSU team that won the MAC Regular Season championship will be honored. This season marks the 10th anniversary of the team that won a school-record 22 league games. Also, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch will be former Falcon Gary Haas. Haas was a two-time captain of the Falcons and was a member of the 1972 BGSU squad that won the school's first MAC Championship. Haas was inducted into the BGSU Hall of Fame in 1994.
• Nolan Reimold's 16 home runs this season are the third-most in a single season by a Falcon, tying Scott Dukate's total in 2001. Lee Morrison had 18 in 2001 and Kelly Hunt set the record with 22 in 2002. Also, Reimold becomes just the sixth Falcon to hit 30 career home runs.
