Bowling Green, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced its 2005 men's golf Academic All-MAC Team on May 11, as voted by faculty athletic representatives at the MAC institutions. The team honors seven student-athletes. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
Ball State led the way with two student-athletes on the Academic All-MAC team in Wayne Denger and Patrick Wilkes-Krier. Denger and Wilkes-Krier also received second-team All-MAC honors for the 2005 season.
Bowling Green placed 2005 Sportsman of the Year Craig Pickerel on the team. Pickerel has earned his undergraduate degree in architectural design (3.88 GPA) and is taking graduate courses towards a master's degree in industrial technology (4.00 GPA). Four other honorees also earned Academic All-MAC and all-conference recognition for the 2005 season. Eastern Michigan's Korey Mahoney and Toledo's Justin Bertsch garnered first-team All-MAC honors, while Northern Illinois' Nick Schenk and Ohio's Ryan Siekmann were named to the second-team.
Pickerel and Schenk are the only two to repeat selections in the group, as the rest of the team was honored for the first time.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
