Falcons pound out a season-high 14 hits in nightcap
ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team exploded for a season-high 14 hits en route to an 8-1 win over Ohio University on Saturday (April 11) afternoon. The win gave the Falcons a split of the teams' Mid-American Conference doubleheader.
The Bobcats captured the opening game of the twinbill, 9-3, at Ohio Softball Field.
The Falcons (17-21, 5-12 MAC) have topped the win total for all of last season.
Hannah Simko was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game, drawing a walk as well. Hannah Hunt had a double in each game of the doubleheader, going 3-for-5 in the nightcap, while Katie Hutter and Addie Martin each had a two-run hit in game two, and Hanna Massaro had four RBI on the day.
The Bobcats (27-15, 10-7 MAC) led by a single run in the opener before breaking the game open with a six-run fifth frame.
BGSU-OHIO GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU took an early lead in the opener. Izzy Ray was hit by a pitch with one out, and came around to score on a double by Hannah Hunt.
• But the Bobcats responded quickly. Belle Hummel walked, Colleen Bare doubled and Brenna Farmer singled as the hosts put two runs on the board.
• In the second inning, Hummel had a two-out hit and wound up scoring on an error to give the 'Cats a 3-1 lead.
• Peyton Steffes got on base via an error in the third inning, and the junior promptly stole second base before scoring on a Taylor Behrendt two-out single.
• It remained a 3-2 game until the fifth. Shelby Westler hit a leadoff homer, and later in the inning, Hummel hit a grand slam to give her team an 8-2 lead. Bare followed with a homer of her own.
•BG got a run back in the sixth when Cameron Kaufman walked with two outs, moved up a base on a wild pitch and scored on a Hanna Massaro double. But, the Falcons would get no closer.
• Hummel and Bare, the top-two hitters in the Ohio order, combined for five hits and six RBI, while Skipp Miller pitched six innings to pick up the win.
• Hunt and Messaro each doubled, while Behrendt had a single. Each of those three Falcons drove in a run, while Kaufman walked twice and scored a run.
BGSU-OHIO GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons got a pair of hits in the opening inning, as Ray doubled, Hannah Simko walked and Hunt had a base hit. But, an out at the plate kept the Falcons off of the scoreboard.
• In the second inning, however, Kaufman singled, stole second and scored standing up on a base hit by Massaro.
• Morgan Beckham worked around a second-inning, one-out walk, getting a pair of popups to retire the side. Kaufman made the third out, reaching over the wall to grab a foul pop.
• In the third, Simko singled with one out, and came all the way around to score on Hunt's double into the left-center field gap.
• BG loaded the bases in that third frame, as Addie Martin was hit by a pitch, and one out later, Kaufman was plunked as well. Then, Katie Hutter's sharp single to right scored a pair of teammates and doubled the lead. And, Massaro singled as well, with two more runs crossing the plate when the ball got past the left fielder for a 6-0 lead.
• The Bobcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the third on a leadoff single by Hummel and a pair of walks, but a soft liner was gloved by Kaufman at short to end the threat.
• Ray led off the Falcon fourth with a walk, and took second on Simko's sharp single. After a pitching change, Hunt singled through the left side to load the bases with no outs. And, Martin lined a ball over the left fielder's head for a two-run double and an 8-0 lead. The Bobcats got out of the inning as Hutter's two-out drive was caught on the warning track in right.
• The 'Cats got on the board on an Alexis Book homer with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Bare led off with a double and took third on a fly ball to right, but Beckham struck out Westler, then got an inning-ending fly to center on the next pitch.
• BGSU loaded the bases in the sixth inning on a Simko single and walks to Ashley Chevalier and Kaufman, but the hosts were able to keep their seven-run deficit from increasing.
• The seventh inning saw Ohio put two runners on base with no outs, but Beckham got a popup to Ray at first and a fly ball to Steffes in center. A walk loaded the bases before Steffes grabbed a fly ball off the bat of Kylie Gorsuch to end the game.
• All nine starters in the BG batting order reached base at least once via hit or walk, as BG had four free passes in addition to those 14 hits.
• Simko was 4-for-4 with a walk and two runs, while Hunt had three hits, including a double. Massaro was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Hutter and Martin each scored a run and drove in two.
• Beckham picked up the complete-game win, allowing one run and six hits. She walked four batters but struck out five.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons and Bobcats will close their three-game series on Sunday (April 12), with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. at Ohio Softball Field.
• Then, after a non-conference trip to Michigan on Wednesday evening (April 15), the Falcons will then play the next eight games at home, with three-game sets vs. both Northern Illinois (April 17-18) and Massachusetts (April 24-25) and a non-league doubleheader against Oakland on Tuesday, April 28.
