CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Three Bowling Green State University student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Softball Team for 2005. Juniors Lindsay Heimrich and Liz Vrabel and sophomore Megan McPherson all were named to the team, which is the result of voting by the league's faculty athletic representatives.
A total of 19 student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
BGSU and Buffalo paced the conference with three selections apiece.
Vrabel, the MAC Pitcher of the Year in 2005, also was named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team, and was chosen to the All-Great Lakes Region Second Team Wednesday (May 18). She had a 17-14 overall record, a 1.75 earned-run average and a school-record 237 strikeouts on the season.
Heimrich was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team last week. The junior was fourth on the Falcons in hitting, with a .250 batting average, and also had a 5-8 record in the circle. She is one of just three student-athletes who is a repeat selection to the academic all-league squad.
McPherson, who was chosen to the All-MAC Second Team, hit .297 on the year, good for second on the club. She led the Falcons in stolen bases, with 16, and was second on the team in runs scored (23) and hits (52).
Buffalo's Stacey Evans was selected to the team for the third consecutive year and was joined by teammates Ann Magur and Melissa Pace on this year's squad. Magur was also an Academic-All MAC selection in 2003.
Four schools had two selections each on this year's team. Central Michigan's Jacque Benedict and Lindsey Calme were selected to their first Academic All-MAC team, while Amy Brownfield and Alyssa Huffman represented Ball State. Eastern Michigan's Nikki Denman was named to the team for the second time in as many years and was joined by teammate and second-team All-MAC selection Liz Flack. Abby Molnar and Brittney Robinson each garnered Academic All-MAC honors for Kent State.
Marshall's Randi Nielson was named to the Academic All-MAC team for the second time in her career. Nielson was also selected to the All-MAC first-team by the league's coaches. Akron's Rachel Kraus, Northern Illinois' Megan Meyer, Ohio's Marian Davis and Western Michigan's Amy Fleming rounded out this year's team.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
