CLEVELAND, Ohio - Buffalo's Faith Thompson (track and field) and Bowling Green's Jeff Warnock (baseball) have been named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Friday. Warnock's honor marks the fourth time a BGSU baseball student-athlete has garnered the award in the last seven weeks.
Warnock (outfield, Sr., 3.88, early childhood studies, Cincinnati, Ohio) hit .538 last week, as the Falcons went 4-0. He had seven hits in 13 at-bats, with five runs and four RBI and was 5-for-11 at the plate in BGSU's three-game sweep of Toledo. On the week, Warnock also walked once, was hit by a pitch twice and had two stolen bases. He had a slugging percentage of .615 and an on-base percentage of .625.
Warnock was 2-for-2 with a double, a sacrifice bunt and a run scored in the Falcons' win over Wright State, before going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the opener versus the Rockets. He was 2-for-4 again the next day, with a walk, a HBP, two runs and two RBI. On Sunday, Warnock was 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI, another HBP and a pair of steals. BGSU scored 43 runs in the three-game sweep of the Rockets. Warnock also was named to ESPN the Magazine All-District First Team last week, after earning second-team honors in 2004. He entered this week's action hitting .309 on the year, with 31 runs scored and 22 RBI, and was tied for the team lead with eight steals.
Thompson (throws, Gr., 3.973, school counseling, Niagara Falls, N.Y.) won the MAC title in the hammer throw at 198-10 (60.60 meters). Thompson broke her own UB, MAC and Ohio track records with the victory, and has won the hammer throw in seven of UB's eight meets this season. She also placed third in the shot put at 50-5.50 (15.38 meters).
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Female Nominees:
Bowling Green: Kerri McClung (track & field, throws, Sr., 3.85, special education, Portland, Ind.) was the MAC Champion in the shot put, with a throw of 51-7 (15.72 meters) at the league meet in Athens, Ohio, Friday. She broke the track record by over a meter. The MAC title was the second of her career, as she also won an indoor shot put crown in 2003.
Central Michigan: Christin Sobeck (softball, outfield, Sr., 3.15, secondary education. Alpena, Mich.) was named to the all-tournament team last weekend at the MAC Championships. She hit a team-high .417 going 5-for-12 with a double, a homer and an RBI. The outfielder walked four times. In CMU's 4-1 win over Buffalo, Sobeck hit her 16th career home run which tied the CMU career record with two other individuals.
Miami: Jackie Poggendorf (softball, P/IF/OF, Sr., 3.18, exercise science, Phoenix, Ariz.) spearheaded Miami to the program's first MAC Tournament crown and first NCAA Tournament berth, earning Tournament MVP honors for the second time in her career. Miami went through the MAC Tournament with a perfect 4-0 mark. Poggendorf earned wins during the tournament, allowing just two runs in 14.2 innings of work for an 0.95 tournament ERA. In Sunday's championship, she allowed only two hits and a walk in five innings of work, striking out five before giving way to Courtney Salmon for the last two frames. Poggendorf is Miami's career leader in strikeouts, appearances, innings, games started, and holds the career wins record. She and Salmon have teamed up to throw 412 strikeouts this season and are just two away from setting a MAC record for strikeouts in a season.
Western Michigan: Kristi Ford (track & field, thrower, Sr., 3.54, physical education, Lowell, Mich.) contributed 13 points towards WMU's fourth-place finish at the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships -- the program's highest finish in 18 years. Ford was runner-up in the hammer throw (182-10) and took fourth in the high jump (5-7).
Male Nominees:
Central Michigan: Nicholas Stout (track and field, hurdles, Jr., 3.12. journalism, Lake Orion, Mich.) won the MAC individual championship in the 400-meter hurdles (51.85) and placed second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.04) last weekend in helping lead the Chippewas to the team championship. The times he turned in for both events were NCAA Regional qualifiers.
Miami: Chris Swisher (track & field, middle distance, Sr., 3.27, life science education, Milan, Ind.) earned silver and bronze medals at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He took home the silver in the 5,000 meter run, just seconds behind teammate Dan Huling to pull off the one-two finish in the event for the RedHawks. It was Miami's only one-two finish of the meet. Swisher also notched a third-place finish in the 1,500. His second-place finish in the 1,500 equaled his best MAC Championship finish in the event, while his third-place 5,000 finish was three places better than his 5,000 finish from a year ago. Earlier this season,Swisher provisionally qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the 1,500.
