BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - They say a team makes the most improvement between it's first and second game of the season. For BGSU, that was evident as it posted a 2-0 victory over Michigan Friday in an exhibition game at Cochrane Field. The Falcons, who have 17 players who are either freshman or sophomores knocked off a Wolverine squad which was ranked 23rd in the country at the end of last season.
"We have shown that we have the talent to play soccer, but doing it at the collegiate level is much different," said Thompson. "We played faster and harder than we did in our first game against Oakland."
The Falcons lead 1-0 at halftime. Freshman Kyle Williams scored at 13:43 on a pass from fellow newcomer Justin Kim.
Three Falcons were utilized in goal to pitch the shutout as the Wolverines outshot the Falcons 18-11. Freshman Paul Shoemaker recorded a team high four saves. Redshirt junior Brandon Decker and sophomore Brent Petkus each recorded two saves in the net.
"It was an excellent effort," said Thompson. "We were younger and smaller and they were more physical. We had to make up for that, and we did."
Senior Dave Belfort solidified the Falcons victory with a late unassisted goal at 89:40.
The Falcons will open the season on the road Sept. 3, when they travel to Green Bay, Wis., for a tournament. The Falcons' opening match is against Sacred Heart, with kick-off set for 2:30 p.m.
