Falcons Head to Green Bay to Open 2005 Season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team will begin the 2005 season with seven of September's nine games on the road ... the Falcons will open against Sacred Heart University as part of the UW-Green Bay Nike Classic in Green Bay, Wis., this weekend ... Saturday's game (Sept. 3) against Sacred Heart will mark the beginning of head coach Fred Thompson's sophomore season ... kick-off for the match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central (3:30 p.m. Eastern) ... the Falcons will face Eastern Illinois the following day (Sept. 4) with another 2:30 p.m. Central start.
Leading the Flock
Fred Thompson begins his second year as BGSU head coach after serving two seasons as assistant at the University of Evansville and two years at Bellevue Community College ... named 2001 NWAACC Coach of the Year ... became only the fourth head coach in the 40-year history of the BGSU program after accepting the job in April, 2004 ... played professionally for eight years ... assistant coach Tony Economopoulos enters his third season with the Falcons ... served two seasons as assistant coach at Western Illinois University ... 2002 AFLAC Insurance National Assistant Coach of the Year nominee.
Birds of a Feather Flock Together
The 2005 roster features 10 freshman and a sophomore class which outnumbers the upperclassmen, 7-6 ... Omari aldridge, who finished last year with four goals and two assists, will begin his final campaign with 40 starts under his belt in 41 games played ... Robert Aouad is being projected as a target player ... the midfield corps will be led by senior Dave Belfort who is known as a role player ... freshman George Davis IV is expected to have a breakout year due to his physical skill and ability to scrap to make plays ... newcomer Justin Kim can receive passes well and has the fundamental skills all coaches look for in a complete player.
Scouting the Pioneers
Head coach Joe Barroso will begin his first year leading the Pioneers with a career record of 23-28-3 over the past three years ... Sacred Heart finished the 2004 season with a 1-14-1 record ... will begin the season with 16 freshmen and only six seniors ... the Pioneers' offense will be fueled by senior Neal Shapiro and junior Gustavo Netto who each scored one goal last season ... senior Matt Weston, who had a .630 save percentage, will be in net.
Scouting the Panthers
Head coach Adam Howarth will begin his fifth year with the Panthers after posting a 36-51-5 record in as many years ... Eastern Illinois finished last season with a 5-12-1 record ... the Panthers will return 14 letter winners after losing just six ... senior forward Jimmy Klatter was the top scoring Panther in 2004 with 10 goals and four assists ... goalkeeper will be a troubling position for the Panthers this season after losing their top keeper ... returning to goal after sitting out the 2004 season will be Casey DeCaluwe.

The Falcons found the net twice in a 2-0 victory over Michigan in an exhibition game at Cochrane Field on Sept. 26 ... at the end of last season, the Wolverines were ranked 23rd in the country ... the Falcons lead 1-0 at halftime from freshman Kyle Williams' goal at 13:43 ... senior Dave Belfort solidified the Falcons' victory with a late unassisted goal at 89:40 ... three Falcons were utilized in goal to pitch the shutout as the Wolverines outshot the Falcons 18-11.
