Sophomore Jamie Roflow and junior Rogers Kipchumba each won their races at Saturday's Mel Brodt Invitational. Roflow won her race with a personal-best time of 17:31, eclipsing last weeks PR of 17:56. She was first out of 83 runners and crossed the finish line 30 seconds before her nearest competitor. Kipchumba led his field of 101 runners, crossing the finish line with a time of 25:41. The Falcon women took home the team title outscoring their nearest competitor by 60 points.
Head coach Cami Wells was very happy with her squad.
"I was pretty pleased with them overall," said Cami Wells." They've been working hard and it is starting to show."
Following Roflow was fellow sophomore Stephanie Hillman, who crossed the finish line in second place with a personal-best time of18:01. Junior Andrea Pollack crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 18: 29. Following Pollack was Kim Settle (6th, 18:41 PR), Kara Butler (9th, 19:08 PR), Bridget Dalic (10th, 19:16), Colleen Moran (12th, 19:40), Caroline Kipchaba (16th, 19:51), Kulie Korsnack (29th, 20:28), Katy Senn (34th, 20:43 PR), Leslie Carden (42nd, 21:00), Angie Raizis (44th, 21:11 PR) and Emily Jackson (47th, 2120).
Coach Wells was especially pleased with Roflow's performance,
"She ran an outstanding race that solidifies her as one of the top runners in the conference," said Wells. "She ran the race alone almost the entire race. She's been training really hard and hasn't gotten to rest much. Stephanie ran her race pretty much a lone and I'm proud of that too."
The Falcons were looking to get everyone closer together, within a minute or so, but today, that didn't happen. The top seven Falcons were within two minutes or so of each other, while the top five scorers were within 1:41 of each other.
"We've been working on getting everyone closer together, said Wells. "We still have some work to do in that regards. I would like to see everyone of the top 7 under 19 next time we run on a fast coarse. We won't get a change to run a fast pace 5k course till October when we come home for the Falcon Invite."
The Falcon men placed third out of a field of nine teams.
Crossing the line 2nd for the Falcon men was sophomore Edgar Ramirez, who was 12th with a time of 27:05. Ramirez was followed by Bryan Jackson (17th, 27:17), Kevin Kaighin (20th, 27:33 PR), Jeremy Hartley ( 25th, 27:42 PR), Aaron Smuda (27th, 27:47 PR), Brett Finnan (30th, 27:54), Steve Vairetta (40th, 28:09), and Curtis Farnsel (50th, 28:49).
"I was very pleased with the men,," said Wells. "We were hoping to come away with the team championship, and that didn't happen but they ran a respectable race and competed hard. Our top 2 through 8 men ran the closest they've been in quite a few years. We need to work on getting the gap between Kip and the rest of the men closer."
The Falcon will return to competition in two weekends as they travel to Palo Alto, California to compete in the Stanford Invitational.
