CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green's Jamie Roflow (cross country) and Ohio's Austen Everson (football) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 14).
Roflow (So., 3.89, undecided, Cincinnati, Ohio) was the individual champion as the Falcons won the nine-team Mel Brodt Invitational. She was the individual winner for the second weekend in a row. Roflow ran a personal-best time of 17:31 to eclipse her PR, set the previous week, by 25 seconds. She finished first in the 83-runner race, crossing the finish line 30 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.
Everson (QB, Jr., 3.56, management and strategic leadership, Brentwood, Tenn.) set a new career high with 13 pass completions on 23 attempts and finished with 112 yards through the air while managing an offense that did not commit a turnover in leading the Bobcats to one of the biggest victories in school history. The Bobcats defeated Pittsburgh,16-10 in overtime on Thursday.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Female Nominees:
Ball State: Alison Becker (soccer, GK, Jr., 3.478, biology, Bettendorf, Iowa) allowed no goals in two wins for Ball State this past weekend. She registered three saves in 56:28 minutes in goal in BSU's 6-1 win over IPFW Friday and one save in 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory at Wright State on Sunday. Overall, she has tallied three shutouts and allowed only three goals for the Cardinals in just six games this season.
Buffalo: Natalia Crofut (soccer, forward, Sr., 3.588, English, East Aurora, N.Y.) scored goals in both of UB's weekend games, including the game-winner in Friday's 2-1 win against crosstown rival Canisius. Crofut is three points away from becoming the first UB player since Paula Listrani ('97-'00) to score 10 points in all four of her seasons. She is currently eighth in both career points (52) and goals (21) in UB history.
Central Michigan: Cortney Blanchard (field hockey, forward, Jr., 3.03, marketing, Cape Town, South Africa) scored a second-half goal which tied the score against Virginia on Saturday and helped CMU force overtime. The Chippewas later won in OT by a 2-1 count.
Eastern Michigan: Bethany Piccolini (volleyball, Sr., 3.37, sports medicine, St. Clairsville, Ohio) led Eastern Michigan to the finals of the Valpariso Tournament, where EMU had wins over Drake and St. Louis, then finally lost a tough five-game match to the tournament host. For the entire tournament, Piccolini had a 38% kill percentage. She had 44 kills, scored 52 points, recorded one block and assisted on six other blocks. As a result, Piccolini was named to the all-tournament team.

Amidst a strong tournament field at the Pittsburgh Invitational, which boasted three 2004 NCAA Tournament teams, Reihman led Miami to a second-place finish, falling just short of the tournament title in a five-game loss to Maryland. Reihman averaged 4.21 kills per game over four matches to lead the RedHawks and posted a team-best .381 hitting percentage for the week. She notched 11 kills and a sizzling .625 hitting percentage versus Morehead State, making just one attack error off 16 attempts, while knocking down eight blocks (2.7 per game) versus the MSU Eagles. On Sunday, VanDuerm tallied the gamewinner with just 1:10 left in regulation for a 3-2 road victory over Valparaiso University. He is one of three Huskies with two goals this year.
