CINCINNATI, Ohio - While most freshmen get the chance to learn the ins and outs of the college game, the BGSU men's soccer team has not been as fortunate. Coach Fred Thompson's Falcons, which features only six seniors, did not have the luxury of a learning curve as the young Falcons fell to Xavier, 5-0.
"They are a solid team and have the advantage of a veteran upper class," said Thompson of the Mutsketeers which returned 20 of 23 lettermen from the 2004 squad. XU started the match with just one rookie and eight upperclassmen; the Falcons began with seven freshmen.
"We were not out played, just outscored," said Thompson of the Orange and Brown's effort.
XU first scored on Matt Kmetz unassisted free kick which passed through a wall of Falcons standing 25 yards out. Two minutes later Matt Wheeler scored the first of his two goals. After the half XU's top offensive threat of 2004, Jon Enders, connected with the back of the net as did Chris Wolever within one minute of each other. Xu's fifth and final goal, Wheeler's second of the night at 78:04, solidified the Musketeers victory.
The Falcons were outshot by XU 9-15 with 11 of Xavier's shots coming in the second half. Keeper Paul Shoemaker finished the night with five saves while XU's Liam Curran had two.
Rookie Ryan Epps, who Thompson has high expectations for, has begun to see more field time and was able to make key stops for BGSU.
The Falcons will play the last of their six straight road games on Sunday, Sept. 18 when they match-up against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The Retriever's come into the match with a 1-3-1 record. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
