BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The BGSU volleyball squad fell to Long Island-Brooklyn University (4-1) in the first match of the BlackBird Classic. Senior Ashlei Nofzinger pounded 11 kills in the losing effort.
The Falcons fought claw-to-claw with the BlackBirds early in game one, knotting the score at 13-13. However just moments later the Brown and Orange committed four attack errors in a six-point span which sprung LIU to a 30-16 win.
BGSU countered with a 30-24 game two victory. Back-to-back kills by redshirt freshman Kendra Halm and Nofzinger sealed the deal for the Falcons.
Game three was a see-saw battle, with the lead changing several times. Unfortunately, Northeast Conference Player of the Week Martina Wagner hammered consecutive kills to down the Falcons 31-29.
The Brown and Orange showed a lot of grit and determination in game four, fighting back from a 10-point deficit (22-12) to threaten the BlackBirds. However, LIU stole the win and handed the Falcons their second close loss of the match (30-28).
Several Falcons moved closer to individual career milestones, such as junior Chrissy Gothke and senior Emily Manser inching closer to the 1,000 digs plateau. Gothke and Manser are now just 64 and 153 digs, respectively, shy of the milestone.
The Falcons look to rebound and grab the BlackBird Classic title with two contests scheduled for Saturday. First up are the Eagles of Georgia Southern at 11 a.m., followed by a match up against Weber State at 3 p.m.
