BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The BGSU volleyball team picks up a pair of wins Saturday at the BlackBird Classic in Brooklyn, New York. The Falcons soared in a 3-0 sweep over Georgia Southern to begin the day, and followed it up with a thrilling five-game win against Weber State.
Senior Emily Manser and sophomore Stephanie Swiger stole the show in game one versus the Eagles of Georgia Southern, blasting 5 kills apiece in the opening game. Swiger was given the starting nod all three games and responded by pounding 13 kills. The Falcons took game one 30-25.
Great defense was the key to the Falcons 30-28 game-two winner, holding Georgia Southern to a feeble .061 hitting percentage. Redshirt sophomore Corrie Mills led the offensive attack, hammering seven kills. Mills totaled 12 kills with an imressive .429 percentage for the match.
Senior Ashlei Nofzinger finished off the Eagles with a match-clinching kill set up by Swiger to take game three 30-26.
While Swiger and Mills' 13 kills paced the offense, sophomore Maggie Karges' 13 digs were tops on the defensive side of the net.
It had been eight years since the last triple-double by a Falcon when junior Chrissy Gothke became the first Falcon to do so (11 kills, 40 assists and 12 digs) since Wendy Watkins accomplished the feat in 1997 against Dayton earlier this season. The wait for another triple-double this time would be just 11 days, as Gothke did it once again by compiling 11 kills, 50 assists and 10 digs in the 3-2 Falcons victory over Weber State.
Defense was scarce in game one, as both squads hit over .300. In the end, Weber State snuck out a 30-28 win.
The Brown and Orange escaped a two games to none deficit with a late-game surge. The Falcons pulled off a 30-27 win despite trailing 24-19 in game two. Sophomore Madeline Means led the comeback with three kills during the stretch. After splitting games three and four, the Falcons were headed for a intense game-five affair.
The Falcons offense was stellar in game five, hitting a .320 percentage. Nofzinger's three kills, including the finishing touch led the Falcons to a 15-13 victory.
Five separate Falcons recorded double-digit kills against Weber State. Halm's nine blocks mark a new career-high for the Bucyrus, Ohio native. Means also set a new career-high with her 12 kills.
BGSU goes 2-1 for the second weekend in a row and now sits at 6-5 on the season. The Falcons will dive into their MAC schedule next weekend with matches at I-75 rival Toledo and the Cardinals of Ball State.
