BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcon tennis squad will open the 2006 home season Sunday, Jan. 29 at Shadow Valley Tennis and Fitness Club when they host the Penguins of Youngstown State University. But first, the Orange and Brown must travel to East Lansing to take on the Spartans of Michigan State University Friday night.
"We would love to travel to MSU and win," said coach Penny Dean. "The expectation is to go up there and play with them."
Dean's optimistic outlook comes from the season opening play the Falcons displayed at Ohio State just one week prior.
"We had close singles and doubles matches at Ohio State and that helped build our confidence," said Dean.
Friday's match will not be the first time the Falcons face the Spartans. During the fall tournament season, BGSU not only competed with MSU in the University of Michigan's Wolverine Invitational, but they also had a chance to scout them at the ITA Midwest Region Championships which were held in East Lansing.
Sunday's match will allow the Falcons to return to the Bowling Green area to host Youngstown State University. Dean sees the afternoon match-up as another strong competition to prepare her team for conference play.
"YSU has some newcomers at the top of the line-up which makes them very dangerous," warned Dean.
Dangerous situations would not be anything new to the in-state programs. Last season the match was, by Dean's account, a "nail biter" that was determined by the last flight. The Falcons gave the final push to win the match 4-3.
The Orange and Brown will continue their hectic pre-conference schedule with a set of consecutive matches for the next three weekends.
