BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team came out with a fire on Saturday night versus Ohio State, opening the contest with several large hits and great scoring opportunities, but OSU's Joseph Palmer answered the bell as the Falcons lost 4-1 inside the BG Ice Arena.
Junior forward Derek Whitmore looked to put the Falcons ahead as he skated in on Palmer uncontested early in the first period, but Palmer made a great blocker save to keep the game scoreless.
Minutes later Whitmore had another great opportunity, but once again Palmer slammed the door.
Ohio State (4-6-2, 4-4-2) finally got their offense going with a goal by Matt Waddell at the 9:39 mark of the first period, for the lone goal for the first 40 minutes.
The Buckeyes recorded the next two goals, one by Kyle Hood at the 2:49 mark of the third and the other by John Dingle at the 14:58 mark, also in the third.
BGSU (3-8-1, 1-7-0) finally got on the scoreboard with just under four minutes remaining in the contest. Junior assistant captain John Mazzei brought the puck up on a rush and found a streaking Todd McIlrath down the left side. McIlrath fed the puck to a wide-open Michael Hodgson at the right circle, who lifted the puck past Palmer for the Falcons lone goal of the night.
OSU added an empty-net goal with just 31 seconds remaining for the final 4-1 tally.
On the night Ohio State held a 29-21 shot advantage, while both teams went scoreless on the power play (BGSU 0-7, OSU 0-5).
Sophomore Jimmy Spratt made 25 saves in the loss, while Palmer picked up the win with 20 of his own saves.
Up next for the Orange and Brown is a trip to New York, as they will play both Clarkson (Nov. 24) and St. Lawrence (Nov. 25) next weekend. Both contests are set to begin at 7:05 p.m.
