POTSDAM, New York - The Bowling Green State University hockey dropped a 5-0 decision Friday night in Potsdam, New York, to the Golden Knights of Clarkson University. The loss if the Falcons' fifth straight.
"The guys worked extremely hard and created chances, but our inability to score goals is hurting us," said BGSU head coach Scott Paluch. "There were times that I thought our power play moved the puck really well and created chances. When you are struggling to score goals, the goals against can really magnify."
Clarkson (7-5-1) took just 2:14 to take a 1-0 lead off the stick of Mike Sullivan. The Golden Knights scored two more times in the first period for a 3-0 advantage after 20 minutes of action.
The Falcons showed life entering the second period, with several scoring chances including a great opportunity by sophomore Brandon Svendsen, who skated in uncontested just seconds after junior Jonathan Matsumoto was called for a questionable hooking call midway through the second period.
While still in the second, the Falcons once again looked to get on the scoreboard with the help of an excellent fore-check. The puck eventually found the stick of freshman Kai Kantola, who looked to have squeezed the puck between the pads of CU goaltender David Leggio, but somehow the puck went wide with just over two minutes left in the second stanza.
After the opening 10 minutes, where the Falcons were out-shot 7-1, the next 30 minutes saw the Falcons hold an 18-7 shot advantage over the Golden Knights.
The Falcons (3-9-1) continued to dominate the shots opening the third period with a 3-1 advantage, but a David Cayer goal at the 7:44 mark of the third for Clarkson ended the Orange and Brown run.
Clarkson added a final tally with five minutes remaining for a 5-0 final score.
On the night freshman Eddie Neville stopped 15-20, while CU's David Leggio stopped all 23 Falcon shots for the shutout.
The Falcons went 0-for-8 on the power play and the Golden Knights were 1-for-5.
Up next for the Falcons is a contest just down the road with the St. Lawrence Saints tomorrow night (Nov. 25). Saturday's game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
