BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Post-game quotes after the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team's 89-58 win over Oakland University Wednesday (Nov. 29) at Anderson Arena ...
SENIOR CARIN HORNE
(On scoring her 1,000th career point)
"It feels great. I didn't know I was so close, but at halftime, Coach said I was just two points away. He ran a few plays for me and I was able to get it."
(On missing her first four shots of the night, but making the final seven of the first half)
"I have a shooter's mentality. Take the open shot; if I miss, I just keep shooting and hope the next one will go in."
(Coming into tonight's game, were you nervous about the possibility of scoring your 1,000th point?)
"No, I wasn't. It's a big accomplishment, but I figured it would come eventually. I was nervous about Oakland. They are a great team, and all we were focusing on was trying to get a win tonight."
SENIOR ALI MANN
(How is it for the rest of you when Carin heats up like she did tonight?)
"It's great. It takes a lot of pressure off of the rest of us. Everyone on our team can score, and when one of us is hot, Coach Miller does a great job of calling the right plays and getting people the ball. We, too, know who to get the ball to. Carin's an amazing player, especially when she gets it going like she did tonight. For her to reach 1,000 points, we are all proud of her."
(What enabled you to get such a big lead?)
"I think it was rebounding. We started off the game rebounding the ball very well, and I think that led to some transition points. We got out and ran, and got our wings and our point guards some easy layups. Making easy baskets like that gets us hyped up on defense, and helps us get defensive stops and rebounds. We just had everything going for us, and we were making shots like crazy in the first half."
(Was it nice to get that big lead, and to get to sit on the bench instead of having to play all 40 minutes?)
"Well, it was nice to see everyone have the chance to get into the game and see some significant minutes. We got to see the freshmen get in tonight; at one point, we had three freshmen and two sophomores out on the court together. For them to get in there, not for just a minute or two, but to get in there at the 10-minute mark and get some things going ... I mean, we saw Laura Bugher show some great post moves and get into the flow of the game. It's great to be able to play well and then have other people get their chance to shine, too, and we saw that tonight with some of our younger players; they stepped up big."
(Kate Achter made a hustle play, going into the stands to save a ball that was going out of bounds and get a steal, and that led to a Liz Honegger three-pointer at the other end. You were already up by 30 points or so; how much does it fire you up to see your teammates still playing hard like that with a big lead?)
"It pumps us up. Coach stressed that Oakland is a hard-working team, and we did not want to let them out-work us. I think, on that play, Kate had just gotten yelled at for not crashing the offensive boards, so you knew she was going to go running into the stands. That's just the way we play; we're hard-nosed, and we get after it."
