BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University fell at home as they were edged out by Northern Illinois University, 190.850-190.025. Senior Jessica Guyer returned back in the line-up to lead the Falcons. She tied for third on the vault (9.725), tied for first on the beam (9.750) and won the floor with a 9.775.
The Falcons led the first three events, but going into the last event, floor, faced obstacles that they could not overcome. Assistant Head Coach Kerrie Beach was proud of her teams effort at the end, "Even though we ran into rough times on the floor, our team showed its character to finish hard."
The Orange and Brown grabbed an early lead after the first event, vault. Guyer and Allison Swafford (9.725) would finish strong, by sticking their routines to tie for third. Swafford would also record her personal best during this event. With momentum on their side the Falcons headed onto the bars.
Senior Jessica Bradley would shine for the team by flipping her way to a 9.625 and a tie for second. Jholeen Ponce and Marie-Eve Boisvert both finished with a 9.600 and a tie for fourth. Going into the third event the Falcons increased their lead to 1.050.
The beam would see three Falcons finish in the top five. Guyer (9.750) would tie NIU's Leah Johnson for first, followed by Bradley (9.700) tying for third, and Ponce (9.600) finishing fifth.
With the lead down to only .600, the floor would be the achilles heal for the Falcons. Jillian Stranges started the team off with a third place finish and a score of 9.675. Guyer would later follow and stick a stellar performance that would win her the floor with a 9.775. They would be the only Falcons to finish in the top eight. Sadley, the home team saw their lead diminish.
"The loss is hard to take," said Beach, "but the fact that we led the whole meet and only loss by a slim margin gives us hope going into MAC play."
The Falcons will hit the road for the next five weeks. They will face three MAC opponents, including Kent State University, who BGSU lost to earlier this year. They will return home for senior night on March 17, and host the last MAC meet against Eastern Michigan.
