Kurt Thomas Resigns As Women's Golf Coach

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's golf head coach Kurt Thomas has announced his resignation, effective immediately. Thomas, who has been with the women's golf program since 1998, will continue to serve as the Director of Golf for the Forrest Creason Golf Course.
"This was a difficult decision," said Thomas. "Fortunately I will have the great opportunity to work full time as the Director of Golf, which will also allow me to spend more time with my family."
BGSU's best finish under Thomas at the Mid-American Conference Championships is a fifth-place finish in 2000 and 2001.
"We wish Kurt well in his full time role as Director of Forrest Creason Golf Course," said Assistant A.D. Jim Elsasser. "Kurt has a passion for golf and he can now solely focus his energy on managing the course."
Over the past eight years Thomas has coached 18 NGCA All-Scholar athletes, six all-MAC performers, four invitational team championships and four individual medalists. Under his leadership his teams and players hold seven current school records.
Thomas earned both his bachelor's degree in political science (1998) and his master's degree in public administration (1991) from BGSU.
Stephanie Young, who is an assistant golf professional at the Sylvania Country Club and an assistant coach at St. Ursula Academy, has been appointed as interim head women's golf coach, effective immediately. Young will become the eighth head coach of the Falcons in 33 years of the program.
"I feel this is a tremendous opportunity," said Young. "I look forward to working with this group in making our team a contender in the MAC."
Young will continue to perform as the assistant golf professional at the Sylvania Country Club, a post she has held since 2004, but will relinquish her duties at St. Ursula.She also has been coaching with that program since 2004.
"We are extremely excited to have Stephanie Young take over the helm on an interim basis," said Assistant A.D. Jim Elsasser. "Stephanie comes highly recommended as a teaching professional. Her familiarity with the MAC will also aid in the transition as the role of head coach."
Young, who earned her bachelors degree in 2002 and her masters in 2003 from the University of Toledo, where she also was a member of the University of Toledo women's golf team from 1998-2002. She earned four letters and was a team captain for the Rockets and in 2000 she was the individual champion at the Bowling Green Invitational.
She also has served as an intern at the United States Golf Association for six months and was as an assistant to the head teaching professional (James P. McGurk) at the Sylvania Country Club.
