Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University football coach Gregg Brandon has announced that D.J. Durkin will assume the role of special teams coordinator in addition to coaching defensive ends for the 2006 season. Last year, special teams coaching was shared by several members of the BGSU coaching staff.
Durkin, who enters his second year as a full-time assistant at BGSU, was a Falcon player from 1997-2000 and also was a graduate assistant for the Falcons in 2001 and 2002. He served in a similar capacity at Notre Dame in 2003 and 2004.
"I think D.J. is a high-energy guy who is organized, can lead and will motivate our players to perform to the best of their abilities on special teams," said Brandon.
Brandon also announced that defensive coordinator John Lovett and assistant coach John Bowers will switch positional assignments next season. Lovett will now coach defensive back and Bowers will work with the teams linebackers.
Lovett is in his second season with the Falcons, while Bowers enters his sixth year at BGSU. Bowers also coached linebackers in 2001 and 2002.
"I think you always try and look at how you can improve as a staff and I believe this move will help us be a better football team in 2006," added Brandon. ™™
