BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green led 4-1 heading into the eighth, but four Purple Ace runs in the last two innings handed the Falcons a 5-4 defeat. Junior Alan Brech continued to shine however, allowing just one run in six innings pitched while fanning four Evansville batters.
With two outs in the first, Junior Josh Stewart's triple to right center was followed by a Senior Tyler Wasserman RBI-single to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Purple Aces matched the score in the home-half of the inning by manufacturing a run with a sacrifice bunt, stolen base and SAC fly.
BGSU countered immediately with a three-spot in the second stanza, gaining a 4-1 advantage. Sophomore Andrew Foster ignited the scoring spurt with a single to open the inning. Juniors Josh Stewart, Kurt Wells and Mike Barnard each contributed an RBI in the three-run second.
Up 4-1 going into the eighth, the Falcons allowed Evansville to score three times in the inning thanks to a hit batter, two walks, two Bowling Green errors and finally an RBI-single by Kern Watts that scored Gabe Bauer.
The Bowling Green lineup was shut down one-two-three in the top of the ninth with the score knotted at 4-4. Evansville continued the "small ball" in the ninth, using a pair of sacrifice bunts to complete the late-inning comeback, 5-4.
Brech's record remains 0-0 after another no decision despite a slim 1.80 ERA in four starts this season. Junior Josh Dietz increased his season average to .382 with a pair of hits.
Bowling Green looks to even the series Saturday afternoon, first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.
