BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored 10 runs in the first five innings to cruise to a 10-1 win over Heidelberg College Wednesday afternoon at Warren Steller Field. The win improves the Falcons to 10-11 on the season.
Junior Eric Lawson had three hits, while fellow classmate Josh Stewart had two hits to go along with his two RBIs on the day. Six other Falcons recorded hits in the win, while the Falcons pounded out 11 hits combined.
Sophomore Dan Horvath (1-0) picked up the win and combined with five other Falcon hurlers to hold Heidelberg to just five hits on the afternoon, while striking out seven.
Lawson began the game with a shot that landed just inside the left field foul line, good for a stand-up double. Just two batters later, Stewart drove his teammate across home plate with an RBI-single.
The second inning started much the same for the Falcons, this time a lead-off double by Freshman Brian Hangbers into left field. A pair of groundballs scored the runner, giving Bowling Green an early 2-0 lead.
In the third, wild pitches and a key fielding error by the Student Princes handed Bowling Green a 5-0 advantage. BGSU returned the favor in the fourth with an error, giving Heidelberg their only run of the game.
The Brown and Orange continued to pile it on the next two innings, adding five runs to take a 10-1 advantage after five innings. The nine-run lead proved to be the final score.
Twenty-two players saw action for Bowling Green, and 10 different Falcons scored a run.
Bowling Green will host their first home conference series of the year this weekend, starting on Friday, March 31st. The Falcons and Western Michigan are scheduled to begin play at 3:00 PM.
