BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Baseball team evened their record at 11-11 and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference after a 6-5 win over the visiting Broncos of Western Michigan. Junior Alan Brech (1-0) picks up his first win of the season with six innings pitched, allowing three runs on ten hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Despite a 2.16 ERA in five starts entering Friday afternoon's game, Brech had yet to receive a win.
The Falcons jolted out of the gates, putting three runs on the scoreboard in the first inning. Junior Josh Stewart drove in the first run with a double to right field. A pair of passed balls allowed Stewart to notch the second run. Sophomore Andrew Foster recorded his 12th RBI of the season later in the inning with a sacrifice bunt.
Freshman Ryan Shay got things going the following inning with a single to left center. After another passed ball for the Broncos moved Shay into scoring position, Junior Eric Lawson entered the RBI column with a single to left field, scoring Shay.
An inning-opening triple for WMU in the third spelled diaster for Brech. However, the southpaw dug in and struck out three Broncos, allowing just one run. Western Michigan tacked on a run in the fourth and sixth innings as well to cut the Falcon lead to 4-3 after five and a half innings.
Junior Josh Dietz quickly replenished the Bowling Green lead with a two-run blast to the opposite field in the home-half of the sixth, making the score 6-3. Dietz's home run was the first for a Falcon at Steller Field this season.
Sophomore Nick Cantrell and Tyler Johnson came out of the bullpen to pitch the final three innings, allowing just two runs to secure the 6-5 win. After a homerun by Bronco Travis May cut the lead to one run, Johnson entered the game to get the final out and his second save.
The Brown and Orange continue MAC play with game two against Western Michigan Saturday, April 1 at 1:00 PM.
