BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team heads to Boca Raton, Fla., for this weekend's Worth Classic, hosted by Florida Atlantic University. The tourney begins Friday (March 10), with Bethune-Cookman, Campbell, Rutgers and Seton Hall joining the Falcons and the host Owls.
Live stats from each of the 15 tournament games are scheduled to be available via Gametracker on Florida Atlantic's athletics web site, www.fausports.com. Stats from all of the Falcons' games will be available right here at BGSUFalcons.com.
The Falcons will open the tournament with a pair of games on Friday (March 10), taking on Seton Hall at 11:00 a.m. and Campbell at 1:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Brown and Orange will meet Rutgers at 1:00 p.m. before facing host FAU in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
Following Saturday's action, the teams will be seeded from one through six, with the fifth seed facing the sixth seed at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday (March 12), followed by 3 vs. 4 at 11:00 a.m. and the top-two seeds meeting at 1:00 p.m.
The Falcons are 7-5 on the young season. BGSU went a perfect 6-0 at the Panera Bread Challenge in Chattanooga, Tenn., in the season's opening weekend. Last weekend, the Brown and Orange went 1-5 at the Compass Bank Invitational in Waco, Texas. Four of BGSU's games in that tourney were against nationally-ranked teams -- two each against Baylor and Washington -- while the other two contests were against Mississippi State, a team receiving votes in both of the national polls.
The Falcons picked up a 3-1 win over UW on the final day of that tourney.
On the year, senior Gina Rango is hitting .405 to lead the Falcon hitting corps. Rango also paced the Falcons with 15 hits, three homers, 11 runs batted in, 28 total bases, a slugging percentage of .757 and an on-base pct. of .436.
Junior Jeanine Baca is batting .289, with a team-high seven runs scored. A pair of freshmen, Desiree Miller and Hayley Wiemer, are hitting .263 and .258, respectively.
In the circle, sophomore Emily Gouge has a team-low earned-run average of 1.38, and a record of 2-0. Wiemer is 2-1 with a 1.81 ERA, while senior Liz Vrabel has a 3-4 record, a 2.47 ERA and a team-high 42 strikeouts.
