BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team improved to 17-14 overall and 6-4 in the Mid-American Conference after a 13-7 shelling of the Toledo Rockets. Junior Alan Brech (3-0) was impressive, allowing zero earned runs in eight innings of work.
Toledo struck first with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning after their lead-off batter reached base on an error by the Falcon shortstop.
The Falcons responded in a big way in the home-half of the inning, scoring seven runs. Juniors Josh Stewart and Jeff Telmanik both recorded doubles, combining for five RBI. A blast to straight-away center field by Junior Josh Dietz later handed the Falcons two more runs, Dietz's second homerun on the year.
The Brown and Orange had an opportunity for another big inning in the fifth, but managed to bring only one runner home after a two-out, bases loaded groundball ended the inning.
BGSU continued to roll in the seventh, posting five runs on the scoreboard to take a 13-2 advantage. Freshman Ryan Shay picked up an RBI-single in the seventh.
Despite trailing by 11 runs, the Rockets fought back and scored five runs in the last two innings before Junior Adam Gumpf forced a fly out to center field, ending the game at 13-7.
The I-75 rivalry continues tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM. Bowling Green remains just one game out of first in the MAC standings after Kent State held on for a 7-6 win over Ball State.
