BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to capture a 10-5 victory over the arch rival Toledo Rockets, securing the Falcons second home MAC sweep of 2006. Freshman Marty Baird was impressive in long relief, working the mound for six innings, allowing one unearned run on just three hits while striking out four.
Both squads nothced a lone run in the first inning, the 10th out of 11 home games in which Bowling Green scored at least one first-inning run. All ten games ended with a Falcon victory.
Trailing 4-1 entering the home-half of the fourth, BGSU put a four-spot on the scoreboard to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. Freshman Ryan Shay, who batted .455 in the series, hit the third of back-to-back-to-back Falcon doubles to begin the inning.
It was tied back up at 5-5 after the Rockets managed to score a run in the fifth. However, Sophomore Andrew Foster made Toledo pay after intentionally walking Senior Tyler Wasserman to face him. The Bowling Green, Ohio native roped a shot to center field that resulted in two RBI for the Falcon right fielder. The Brown and Orange took a 8-5 lead after six innings.
Junior Kurt Wells added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh with a two RBI-single. Baird stayed on the mound for the remainder of the game to earn his second win and hand Bowling Green a 10-5 sweep-clinching win over the Rockets.
The Falcons next contest will be against non-conference foe IPFW on Tuesday, April 18 at 2 PM in Fort Wayne, Indiana. BGSU pounded the Mastodons, 16-3, in a game earlier this season held at Warren Steller Field.
