BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green was limited to just five hits in a 7-0 loss at IPFW Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons had several scoring opportunities but failed to capitalize. BGSU drops to 19-15 overall but remains atop the MAC East Division standings at 8-4 in conference play.
The Mastodons got the early hand with a first-inning run, the product of a Quentin Brown RBI-double into left-center field. Bowling Green began the second inning by drawing two walks. However, after a pick-off and double play the scored remained at 1-0.
Falcon starter Greg Becker then settled down and stymied IPFW, shutting out the Mastodons in the second and third. Unfortunately, IPFW notched three more runs in the fourth to gain a four-run edge. The Mastodons then threatened to increase their lead in the sixth with bases loaded. Junior Tyler Johnson then emerged from the Falcon bullpen and fooled the IPFW batsmen into watching strike three on a full count to end the inning.
Freshman Marty Barid kicked off the Falcon seventh with a single right back up the middle. After a flyout, fellow freshman, Travis Owens, followed it up by sending a double into right-center field, his first collegiate hit. With two runners in scoring position, consecutive pop ups ended the Falcon rally.
IPFW tacked on three more in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead that proved to be the final score, evening the season series after Bowling Green pounded the Mastodons 16-3 at home earlier this season.
The Falcons return home to Warren Steller Field Wednesday afternoon for a match-up against Horizon League foe, Cleveland State. BGSU and the Vikings are set to begin play at 3 PM.
