BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball squad continued their unbelievable play at home in Warren Steller Field with a dramatic 5-4 win over Cleveland State Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons scored three runs in the last two innings to complete the rally and move to 20-15 on the season.
As they had done in 10 of the previous 11 home games, the Falcons notched a run in the first inning. BGSU is now 11-0 when scoring a run in the first inning of a home game in 2006. Junior Kurt Wells scored the run off an RBI-single by Josh Stewart.
Bowling Green and the Vikings exchanged lone runs in the third to make a 2-1 BGSU advantage. Wells scored his second run of the game, this time off a double by Senior Tyler Wasserman. Cleveland State's RBI came from an unlikely source, senior outfielder Anthony Hurley. Hurley blooped an RBI-single into right-center, the first collegiate hit of his career.
It may have taken Hurly over three years to record his first hit, but he was at it again in the fifth. He picked up hit number two, driving in two more runs for the Vikings to take the lead. CSU held a 4-2 edge after scoring an additional run in the fifth.
Freshman Chris Gacom later began the eighth with a double to left field. After Freshman Kevin Leady moved Gacom to third, Junior Eric Lawson tallied his 17th RBI of the season with an infield single. The next play was a double play, however, ending the Falcon rally.
Sophomore Brett Browning blanked CSU in the top of the ninth. Wasserman then jump-started the ninth-inning comeback by hustling out an infield single to the left side. Junior Josh Stewart followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt to move the tying run into scoring position. A Falcon flyout limited Bowling Green to just more one out. Freshman Brian Hangbers then calmly delivered a one-hopper off the left-field wall, an RBI-double by the Hamilton, Ohio native.
With Julian Bostelman pinch running at second, Freshman Greg Feldkamp hit a grounder to the first baseman and it looked like the game would be heading into extra innings. However, an errant throw by the Cleveland State first baseman allowed Feldkamp to reach base while Bostelman raced around the bases for the game-winning run.
The Brown and Orange dive back into MAC play this weekend with a three-game series at Akron beginning on Friday, April 21st at 3 PM.
