By JACK CARLE, Sentinel Sports Editor - Jon Jakubowski, from Rossford, started his career at Bowling Green as a walk-on to the football team.
Last fall, he earned a scholarship for his performance on the field.
Saturday night, at Bowling Green's annual scholar-athlete honors banquet, Jakubowski was named the top junior male scholar-athlete. He has a 3.53 grade-point-average in international business/marketing with a minor in Spanish.
"It was just an honor to be nominated, I didn't expect it at all," Jakubowski, who will be a fifth-year senior in the fall, said. "I'm guessing they look at everything that surrounds your life -- not only the academics, but what you do on campus, what you do off-campus; what you do on the field, what you do off the field."
The other top award winners on Saturday were: Aaron Burkart, football, the senior male scholar-athlete with a 3.61 GPA in physical education; Jessica Guinness, swimming, the female senior scholar-athlete award winner with a 4.0 GPA in biology/pre-medicine; and Andrean Bunko, the female Falcon Club junior student-athlete award winner, with a 3.95 in health services.
Time management is a key component for the successful student-athlete.
"It's just something you develop. It's something you really learn your freshman year how to do it," Jakubowski said about staying on top of both athletics and academics. "It is something that I will use the rest of my life, the skill I have picked up over the last four years.
"It is so crucial for student athletes to learn how to do it," he continued. "If you don't have good time management skills, you will really struggle with academics and athletics because of all the time you have to put into it."
After graduation, Jakubowski would like to develop a business in Central or South America.
To that end, he's taking a group of 21 people to Guatemala May 8-18 to do some mission work.
After returning to Bowling Green, he plans to start prepare for his senior season.
"As soon as I get back, it's right to the weight room and summer training for the fall," he said.
