BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - With a 12-3 win over Buffalo Friday afternoon, the Falcons have now banged out 35 runs on 43 hits in the last three games, good for a .374 team batting average. Junior Josh Stewart has recorded nine RBI with a 1.071 slugging percentage in wins over Oakland, Wright State and UB this week. Junior Alan Brech improved to 4-1 with a solid eight-inning outing, allowing just three runs on seven hits.
The Brown and Orange continued the hot bats by pouring on five runs in the first two innings. Freshman Brian Hangbers got things started with a 400-foot shot off the adjacent football field's pressbox in center field for a three-run homer in the first.
Freshman Ryan Shay scored Bowling Green's third run after stroking a one-out double down the left-field line in the second stanza. Shay was driven home when Junior Eric Lawson played copy cat, sending a pitch into left field for a double of his own. Junior Josh Stewart followed with his first RBI of the game, a base-knock to center field.
Stewart was outstanding, going 4-for-5 with three RBI on the day. The Dayton, Ohio native tallied RBI numbers two and three with a double to left-center field in the fourth inning to give BGSU a 7-0 advantage.
After Bowling Green increased their lead to eight runs an inning later, the Bulls started a rally in the bottom of the fifth with three runs for an 8-3 score. However, the five-run margin was as close as Buffalo would get the rest of the game.
Bowling Green racked up four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run, line drive homerun by Lawson that left the ballpark in a hurry down the left field line.
With the win, the Falcons trail Western Michigan by just two games for the sixth and final spot in the MAC tournament. The Broncos were rained out on Friday and are now scheduled for a double-header at Central Michigan Saturday.
The Falcons and Bulls go at it again Saturday afternoon (May 13) with a 1 PM start time. Hangbers is scheduled to take the mound for Bowling Green in the pivotal conference game.
