BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team evened their overall record at 23-23 after a 10-2 road win over Oakland University Tuesday afternoon. A nine-run fourth inning propelled the Falcons to the victory. Eight different Falcons recorded a hit in the contest, with seven of them also picking up an RBI.
BGSU took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when a stolen base by Junior Kurt Wells was followed up by Josh Stewart's RBI-single. The Brown and Orange then poured it on the following inning.
The Falcons compiled eight hits and drove in nine runs during the offensive explosion. Freshman Ryan Shay initiated the offense surge with a run-scoring double that landed just inside the left-field line. Bowling Green continued to pound the Grizzlies starter until he was eventually pulled after allowing eight runs in 3.2 innings.
However, the Falcon bats remained hot and notched two more runs against the reliever. A two-RBI double to right-center field by Freshman Greg Feldkamp handed BGSU a 10-run advantage. Despite four fielding errors by Oakland on the day, all 10 Falcon runs were earned.
The Grizzlies started a rally with two runs in the home-half of the fourth, before eventually falling victim to a 10-2 defeat.
Sophomore Nick Cantrell (6-4) earned the win in his first collegiate start. Fellow sophomores Garret Kloots and Brett Browning combined to throw five scoreless innings to secure the win.
Bowling Green returns to Warren Steller Field Wednesday afternoon for another non-conference match-up. The Falcons and Raiders of Wright State University are scheduled to play at 3 PM.
Also to note, BGSU heads to Buffalo this weekend for a three-game MAC series. With six conference games remaining, the Falcons are 2.5 games back from Western Michigan for the sixth and final post-season slot in the MAC tournament. The Broncos will host Central Michigan over the weekend.
