BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team attacked the visiting Vikings of Cleveland State immediately upon stepping onto the court. Junior Corrie Mills and Freshman Corey Domek racked up 22 kills while hitting at a combined .667 pace during the first two games to give the Falcons an early 2-0 advantage. The tandem recorded 35 kills total for the match.
"I was really happy with our offensive performance tonight. Mills, Domek, Swiger, and Meghan were on fire duringthe first two games. Then we kind of coasted," Coach Denise Van De Walle said. "But the fourthgame said it all.We came back more focused than the third game and jumped out to an early lead which is exactly what we needed to do.Domek is doing a great job attacking the ball for us. She has made the transition from High School to College quite well. She is really strong and fun to watch."
With the score knotted at 8-8 in game one, BGSU went on a 6-1 run and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. Junior Stephanie Swiger and Sophomore Meghan Mohr tacked on nine kills as well in game one. Mills finished off game one by recording the Falcons final three points.
BGSU exploded to hit .463 in the second stanza alone, piling on 21 kills. Despite the Falcons hot hand, Cleveland State held tough until midway through game two. However, the Falcon offensive onslaught continued as Domek's seven kills contributed to the 30-21 win.
The Brown and Orange offense sputtered a bit coming out of the locker room for game three, hitting just .106 in the third frame. Bowling Green trailed for most the game, but made a surge late to excite the home crowd. Swiger blasted a perfectly set ball by Senior Chrissy Gothke to cut the deficit to a lone point at 29-28. Unfortunately, a Falcon attack error followed to hand the Vikings a 30-28 win.
The Falcons responded to the lost set with a 10-4 run to begin game four. Defense was the name of the game for BGSU in the fourth game, holding the Vikings to a -.053 hitting percentage wih eight block assists. Junior Madeline Means chipped in four kills during the final game, a 30-17 Falcon victory.
"Our serving was really good tonight. It may not show up on the stat sheet in aces but we did serve well," Van De Walle said.
"The area that concernedus was our passing. Since we passed so well against Notre Dame we had high expectations tonight. We fell a little short there."
"We liked the crowd tonight. We thought they were great. We hope they come back for our next home matches against Toledo and Ball State."
Bowling Green moves to 1-1 on the season as five seperate Falcons recorded double-digit kills.
The Falcons will next pack their bags, hop on the plane and head to Colorado for a weekend tournament in Denver. BGSU is sceduled to begin the tournament with a match against Denver on Friday, Sept. 1 at 7:30 PM, followed by a pair of matches on Saturday against UC-Riverside and Northern Arizona.
