BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's golf team opens their 2006 fall season on Monday (Sept. 4) as they travel to Allendale, Michigan for the Laker Fall Golf Classic, hosted by Grand Valley State.
The Falcons are coached by second year head coach Stephanie Young. Last season under Young's leadership the Falcons finished first among the six teams at the St. George Invitational in St. George, Utah. It was just the second tournament the Falcons participated under Young.
BGSU returns five participants from last season's squad that finished eighth at the MAC Championships. The Brown and Orange were the only team that improved in all four rounds last season, firing a 325-322-317-315.
Bowling Green is led by junior Carley Hrusovsky who finished 21st at the MAC Championships. Last season alone she fired 14 sub-80 rounds, including a career-best 73 at the Youngstown Invitational and MAC Championships. She finished last season with an 80.15 stroke average and has an 81.66 stroke average for her career.
Not far behind Hrusovsky is fellow junior Jessica McCann. Last season McCann finished with an 80.84 stroke average, including a career-best 73 at the Rocket Classic. The Mason, Ohio, native posted 11 sub-80 rounds last season, which includes a 75-77--152 at the Illini Spring Classic where she was named MAC Player of the Week.
Amanda Bader, the third of four juniors on this season's squad, posted an 82.30 stroke average in 2005-06. Her top performance last season came at the Rocket Classic where she fired 77-78-77--232. For the year she recorded six rounds in the 70's.
Kari Liggett, the Falcons' lone senior is a native of Canton, Ohio. Last season she finished with an 82.79 stroke average, including a 78-76--154 at the Youngstown Invitational, finishing in a tie for second. The highlight of her season though may have come at the MAC Championships. After struggling on day one she posted back-to-back 77's to close out the tournament.
The fifth and final returnee for the Falcons is junior Lindsey Jonkhoff. Jonkhoff completed 15 rounds last season, including a career best 79-76--155 at the Youngstown Invitational. She finished sixth in the tournament.
Two new faces will join the women's golf program for the fall. Both Megan Gormley (Shoreview, Minn.) and Hannah Lambert (Brook Park, Ohio) bring impressive resumes to BGSU. Gormley finished third at her conference championships, and was named to the all-conference team. Lambert earned four letters in high school and was named Southwestern Conference Player of the Year after finishing medalist or co-medalist in 13 of 14 rounds.
Following the two-day tournament in Allendale, Michigan the Falcons will then compete at the Cardinal Classic (Sept. 9-10) and the Taco Bell Ladies Golf Invitational (Sept. 11-12) in Youngstown, Ohio. BGSU is the defending champion of the tournament in Youngstown.
