BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team begins the 2006-07 season this weekend, hosting the BGSU Invitational. The two-day, eight-team event will be held Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 16-17) at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.
Keefe Courts are located off Stadium Drive, directly east of (behind) the BGSU Ice Arena and west of the Cochrane Soccer Stadium complex.
Play begins at 9:00 a.m. each day.
Head coach Penny Dean enters her 17th season at the BGSU helm. She and the Falcons will host a tourney field that includes Akron, Cleveland State, Dayton, Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Toledo, Xavier and Youngstown State. Team scores will not be kept, but individual singles and doubles flight champions will be crowned.
"This is a good 'starter' tournament," said Dean. "It will help to give us an idea of how we stack up against some teams from the region. Also, it is a good opportunity to get all of our players into a competitive setting. The kids are excited to play against someone besides their own teammates."
Dean lost a pair of seniors (Andrea Meister and Heidi Romer) off of last year's squad, but welcomes back seven letterwinners who are joined by a pair of freshmen.
The 2006-07 senior class includes Ashley Jakupcin and Erica Wolfe. They are joined by a pair of juniors, three sophomores and the two frosh.
Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle comprise the junior class, while Libby Harrison, Kelsey Jakupcin and Stefanie Menoff enter their sophomore seasons. Freshmen Katia Babina (Glenview, Ill.) and Samantha Kintzel (Libertyville, Ill.) will make their respective collegiate debuts this weekend.
"It will be nice to see how the freshmen, Katia and Samantha, do in their first appearances," said Dean. "And, after just a few weeks of practice, we are looking forward to putting all nine of our players into the lineup and see how things shake out.
"Obviously, the lineup in April, or even in January, could look very different than it will this weekend. But, it is good to get the season started and see how we shape up against some teams from the Mid-American Conference and the region."
The scheduled format for this year's BGSU Invitational includes seven singles and four doubles flights. In singles, there is an eight-player draw in each of the top six flights, with the seventh flight consisting of four three-player, round-robin brackets. Each of the four doubles flights consists of eight teams.
