BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team improved to 8-2 on the season after capturing a pair of victories Friday at the Youngstown State Invitational.
BGSU opened the tournament with a 3-0 sweep over Youngstown State (30-18, 30-28, 31-29), followed by a five-game win against Duquesne (30-17, 30-26, 18-30, 26-30, 15-5).
The Falcons wasted little time jumping out to an early 11-4 advantage over the Penguins. BGSU used the large lead to cruise to a 30-18 game one win, holding YSU to a .000 hitting percentage while hitting at a .357 pace offensively.
It looked as if game two would be lopsided as well after the Falcons to a 16-10 lead. However, that would not be the case as Youngstown State fought back to a 28-28 stalemate. Junior Stephanie Swiger then recorded a kill and teamed up with fellow junior Madeline Means for a game-ending block.
Trailing 14-13 in the third game, the Brown and Orange ripped off a eight-point run tp take a 21-14 edge. Once again the Penguins battled their way back into the match however, knotting the score at 29-29. Fortunately, it was deja vu for YSU though as the Falcons spoiled the rally by seizing the next two points to win the game.
Four seperate Falcons recorded double-digit kills, including Swiger's team-high 12 terminations.
A combined .384 Falcon hitting percentage for the first two games against Duquesne handed BGSU a 2-0 lead in the nightcap. The Dukes responded by taking the next two games, forcing a fifth and final game. Game four was tied as late as 26-26, but four straight YSU points clinched the game.
Bowling Green regained their offensive chemistry in the fifth game, connecting at a .400 pace. Swiger hammered home four kills in the decisive game. The Falcons defense excelled as well, rejecting three Penguin attack attempts to seal the 15-5 win.
BGSU has two more matches scheduled for the weekend tournament. First, is a 3 PM showdown with Morhead State, followed by a 5 PM matchup against the Red Flashes of St. Francis (PA) on Saturday.
