BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State Univeristy volleyball team captured the Country Inn & Suites Classic at Youngstown State University this weekend by winning all four matches. BGSU capped off the weekend with a pair of wins on Saturday. First, came a 3-1 win over Morehead State (32-30, 28-30, 30-24, 30-20) followed by a dominating performance against St. Francis (30-22, 30-5, 30-25).
Junior Stephanie Swiger was named tournament MVP while fellow Junior Corrie Mills was a member of the All-Tournament team.
The Morehead State Racers accellerated to a 4-1 lead to begin the match. Solid defense by the Falcons limited the MSU offensive attack, allowing BGSU to even the score at 29-29 late in game one. Two kills by Freshman Corey Domek sandwiched around a Racer point gave BGSU a 31-30 lead before Senior Chrissy Gothke sealed the deal with a game-clinching kill assisted by Junior Maggie Karges. Despite outhitting Morehead State by more than 30 percentage points, the Falcons suffered a 28-30 defeat in game two, however.
Game three went back and forth until an 8-1 Falcon run broke up a 19-19 tie, giving BGSU a 27-20 edge. Back-to-back kills by Junior Madeline Means and Swiger handed the Brown and Orange a 30-24 win. BGSU hit .365 in the game three "W." Game four was all Falcons as they cruised to a 30-20 win, capped off with a match-halting kill by Freshman Milica Askic.
With the tournament crown on the line against St. Francis, Bowling Green made a statement by not only beating the Red Flashes, but outscoring them by a combined 90-52 score. Most impressive was a 30-5 game-two showcase in which the Brown and Orange connected at a .636 pace. Askic had a career night, leading the Falcons with 11 kills while hitting .333 for the match.
The Falcons improve to 10-2 on the year and are now set to begin conference play with a home match against arch rival Toledo on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 PM inside Anderson Arena.
