BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University tennis team kicked off the 2006-07 season on Saturday (Sept. 16), hosting day one of the BGSU Invitational at Keefe Courts. No team scores are kept in the two-day, eight-team invite.
Four Falcons have advanced to the championship match of their respective singles flights, led by senior Ashley Jakupcin at the top flight. Stefanie Menoff advanced to the finals in the sixth flight, while BGSU's Libby Harrison and Samantha Kintzel will meet in the championship match of the seventh flight.
The Falcons are joined by Mid-American Conference foes Akron and Toledo, as well as Cleveland State, Dayton, UIC, Xavier and Youngstown State in the tourney.
In the top singles flight, Ashley Jakupcin won a pair of matches on day one to advance to the final. Jakupcin topped UA's Tanya Gombera and CSU's Sarah Galon, with the latter match requiring a third set. Jakupcin will meet UT's Myriam Cueva in Sunday's top-flight championship.
Stefanie Menoff is in the finals in the sixth flight, after losing a total of only three games in two Saturday matches. Menoff stormed past UD's Amanda O'Connell (6-1, 6-1) and CSU's Kristin Chamberlain (6-1, 6-0) to set up a meeting with XU's Annie Diedalis in the championship of that flight.
In the second flight, Jenna Nussbaum took Xavier's Kara Courtney to a first-set tiebreaker before succumbing. At flight number three, sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin is in Sunday's third-place match after a straight-sets win over CSU's Morgan Ungerott, but a loss in the semifinals.
Similarly, Andrea Volle won her opening match, dropping just two games to YSU's Nicole Haralambopolous, but lost to XU's Jeanette Feider in three sets in her semifinal contest. Volle will compete in the third-place match at the fourth flight.
Freshman Katia Babina made her collegiate debut on Saturday, splitting a pair of matches at flight five. After a three-set loss to UT's Jessica Azoulay, Babina rebounded for a straight-sets victory over Christine Vogelgesang of CSU.
The other BGSU newcomer, Kintzel, picked up straight-sets triumphs vs. YSU's Kelly Culbertson and UA's Laura Hemlepp in the seventh singles flight. That sets up a meeting with Harrison in the final, after Harrison posted identical 6-2, 6-2 wins over UD's Mackenzie Hoops and XU's Alicia Papa. Erica Wolfe also competed for the Falcons at that seventh flight.
In doubles, three of BGSU's four teams advanced as one round was completed in each flight. Ashley Jakupcin teamed with Babina for an 8-3 win at the second level, while the Menoff/Kintzel duo was victorious in flight three. Volle and Harrison drew a first-round bye in the six-team fourth flight. Nussbaum and Kelsey Jakupcin dropped their first-round match at the top flight.
Flight champions will be crowned in each of the seven singles and four doubles flights as the tournament concludes on Sunday (Sept. 17). Final-day action is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. at Keefe Courts.
