BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team defeated the arch-rival Toledo Rockets Friday night in a convincing 3-0 sweep. The Falcons streched their current win streak to seven games after hitting .293 and recording 13 blocks in the contest.
"Our blocking tonight was really good. Thirteen blocks in a three-game match is very impressive," Coach Denise Van De Walle said. "Kendra (Halm) blocked over half the balls. She and (Stephanie) Swiger had a great night at the net."
Swiger and Halm dominated on the offensive side of the net as well, combining for 27 kills. Swiger took over the match right from the get-go, racking up nine game-one kills.
"I thought our middles did their job very well. They combined for over half our kills tonight. Their offensive and blocking performance tonight was big time. They were hard to stop."
The opening act was tied as late as 18-18 before the Falcons went on a tear to capture a 30-23 game-one win. BGSU ended the game with style as Swiger and Senior Chrissy Gothke combined for a big-time block, rejecting TaNeisha Winters' attack attempt for the final point.
UT responded by taking a 16-12 advantage in game two. However, the Brown and Orange then rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 19-16 edge. Freshman Corey Domek recorded two kills in the Falcon run. Three more blocks from there aided the Brown and Orange to a 30-25 win.
When the offense cooled off in the third game, the defense stepped up and held the Rockets to a .140 hitting percentage. Bowling Green secured the conference opener after a 30-25 game-three clincher.
BGSU improves to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Falcons are back in action Saturday at 4 PM with a match against Ball State inside Anderson Arena.
Additional quotes from Coach Van De Walle
"I thought Toledo's defense was very good. We knew they would be a very strong serving team but they surprised us a little with how well they dug the ball. "
"I think our serving needs to get tougher...it will be important as the season goes on to keep teams out of system."
"Loved the crowd. We hope they're back for Ball State tomorrow. It will be a battle."
