OMAHA, Neb. - UNO's Scott Parse wristed a shot past Jimmy Spratt with 55 seconds remaining in the contest to down the Bowling Green State University hockey team in game one versus Nebraska-Omaha. In the loss Spratt made 28 saves, earning the third star of the game.
"I thought we played an outstanding hockey game, unfortunately they made the play with a minute left," said BGSU head coach Scott Paluch. "The All-American gets the puck on his forehand and he beats us there. Jimmy Spratt was terrific in goal. We came in here and played a terrific road game. We just came up short."
Sophomore netminder Jimmy Spratt stole the show in the opening period, turning aside all 10 UNO shots, including a one-timer just 27 seconds into the contest by Bryan Marshall. Just two minutes later the puck deflected off the back of a UNO forward and Spratt was there to save the day.
The "Spratt show" continued just minutes later as he denied Ed DelGrosso from the point as well as just in front of the BG cage, as he grabbed his own rebound.
Spratt made 10 saves, while UNO's Jeremie Dupont made nine saves in the first period for a scoreless tie.
BGSU came out flying to start the second, out-shooting the Mavericks 6-0 in the first eight minutes, but UNO's first shot of the second stanza by Adam Barthomay snuck past Spratt to spot the Mavs a 1-0 lead at the 8:00 minute mark of the second.
Just under three minutes later the Orange and Brown knotted the score a one apiece as junior Jonathan Matsumoto fired a laser from the point that found its' way through traffic and whistled by Dupont. Todd McIlrath and Brandon Svendsen assisted on the Falcons' power-play goal.
The two teams entered the locker room tied 1-1, but not before a terrific scoring chance by UNO as Scott Parse was left alone between the circles and wristed a shot that Spratt sprawled to the ground and threw his glove-hand high in the air, robbing the CCHA Player of the Year.
Parse eventually got revenge, as he tweaked a shot past Spratt with just 55 seconds remaining to give the Mavs a 2-1 victory.
On the night BGSU held a 31-30 shot advantage, while going 1-for-8 with the man-advantage. UNO was 0-for-4 on their power play.
Bowling Green and Nebraska-Omaha play again tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m.
