BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons opened the season at home today in a five team meet. Western Michigan walked away with the team victory with 180 points. Miami followed with 132.5 and BGSU finished third with 120.
"I though overall they did a nice job for their first meet this season," said head coach Cami Wells. "We knew Western was going to be tough to beat. We were disappointed we didn't beat Miami but there were opportunities throughout the day that we didn't take advantage of to surpass them."
The Orange and Brown celebrated four individual victories. Jessica White won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.28. Jamie Roflow won the 5,000-meters in a time of 17:29.49. Yemoja Marotta finished first in the 600-meters with a time of 1:37.91. Nicole Standback rounds out the winners finishing first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.85. She also finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.76.
"Nicole did a nice job running well in the 60-meters and then regained her composure to win the 60-meter hurdles," said Wells. " She had a lot of heart and it showed today. I thought Jamie ran a nice race as well. She got out fast, but not too fast and kept it up. She's been a little under the weather so it was nice to see her get out there and get a good first race in. Jess ran really well in the 200-meters. We look forward to seeing her run in the 60-meters since that is her main event. She should progress nicely throughout the season. Momo ( Yemoja Marotta) ran really strong in the 600-meters and then came back to run a great leg in the 4x400.
Other outstanding performances by the tracksters include Kim Settle in the 3,000-meters, finishing second with a time of 10:26.28. Newcomer Danielle Thornton impressed in the 800-meters with a time of 2:23.21, finishing third. Fellow freshmen Carly Bates finished second in the mile with a time of 5:08.14. Senior Erica Wilson jumped 5-04.25 to finish third in the high jump. She also finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 36-10.50. The throws saw Takarra Dunning throw a personal-best in the shotput with 46-03.25 (indoor PR) where she finished second. Paris Bussey followed in third place with a throw of 43-08.00. Lauren Bryant finished third in the weight throw with a PR of 51-11.00.
"There were a lot of strong efforts today and it was nice to get the first meet jitters out of the way," said Wells. "We know what we need to work on for next week."
The Falcons return home next Friday at 5 p.m. for the BGSU Invite.
