CINCINNATI, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati captured the doubles point, then split the six singles matches en route to a 4-3 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday night (Jan. 12). The non-conference match, the first dual of the 2006-07 season for both teams, was held at the Queen City Racquet Club.
UC captured two of the three doubles matches to take the opening point. The BGSU duo of sophomore Stefanie Menoff and freshman Samantha Kintzel gutted out a 9-8 win at the third flight, but UC's team of Hannah Hinton and Elizabeth Young stopped senior Ashley Jakupcin and junior Andrea Volle at flight number two, 8-1.
At the top doubles flight, UC's Dandik/Owens tandem eked out an 8-6 win over sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin and junior Jenna Nussbaum to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, the Falcons won each of the even-numbered flights. Kintzel completed a successful collegiate dual-match debut with a straight-sets victory over the Bearcats' Alizee Paradis at the second flight.
Kelsey Jakupcin at the fourth flight and Menoff at flight six each posted straight-sets wins as well. Jakupcin dropped a total of six games in her sweep of Jenny Rowen (6-4, 6-2), while Menoff lost only two games in her dismantling of Madison Reasoner (6-2, 6-0).
The hosts, however, got wins at the first, third and fifth flights. Rachel Owens outlasted Ashley Jakupcin in a third-set tiebreaker at the top flight, the lone three-set match of the evening.
Friday night's match was a late addition to the schedule. It was arranged earlier in the week, as UC was originally scheduled to face Morehead State on Friday, but MSU was forced to cancel due to injuries.
BGSU continues a four-match road swing with a trip to the Windy City next weekend (Jan. 20-21). The Falcons will take on UIC and DePaul.
