CHICAGO, Ill. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team swept the doubles matches and captured two-thirds of the singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over the University of Illinois at Chicago Saturday (Jan. 20). The non-conference dual was held at Evergreen Racquet & Fitness.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 1-1 in dual-match play, while the Flames -- who have advanced to eight consecutive NCAA Tournaments -- drop to 0-1. BGSU has now won four consecutive matches vs. UIC.
The Falcons' four Illinois natives went a combined 8-0 in the match, as junior Jenna Nussbaum, sophomore Stefanie Menoff and freshmen Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel all won at singles and doubles.
BGSU swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Nussbaum and Kelsey Jakupcin posted an 8-6 win in the closest match of the three, at the top flight, while the teams of Ashley Jakupcin/Babina (flight number two) and Kintzel/Menoff (flight three) each won by 8-3 scores.
In singles play, the Brown and Orange won four of the six matches to take the overall dual-match victory. Kintzel downed her opponent, Callan Smith, in straight sets at the second flight, losing a total of just five games.
Nussbaum dropped only six games in her third-flight win over Ulrikke von Ubisch, and Babina lost only three total games in a sweep of Christina Oum at the fifth flight. Menoff topped Jenna Reisch in their sixth-flight match, 6-4, 6-2.
The Falcons continue their weekend trip to the Windy City with Sunday's (Jan. 21) match vs. DePaul University. Starting time for that match is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. locally (11:00 a.m. Eastern) at the Five Season Racquet Club.
