DePaul Drops Falcons, 5-2, in Sunday Action

CHICAGO, Ill. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Host DePaul University posted convincing victories at the top flights in both singles and doubles en route to a 5-2 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Sunday (Jan. 21). The non-conference dual was held at the Five Seasons Racquet Club in Burr Ridge, Ill.
For the Blue Demons, Sunday's contest was the first dual match of the season. The Falcons drop to 1-2 in dual-match play after splitting a pair of matches in the Windy City over the weekend.
On Sunday, DU picked up a pair of wins at the top-two doubles flights, losing a combined one game in the process. The third-flight match was closer, but DU's Gambrell/Mihaldinec team was able to outlast the Falcons' duo of sophomore Stefanie Menoff and freshman Samantha Kintzel, 8-5. For the Kintzel/Menoff tandem, the loss was the first doubles setback in three dual matches this year to date.
In singles play, the Blue Demons again captured the top flights, winning in straight sets at the first through third levels. For the Falcons, sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin won her first set vs. Kirsten Gambrell at the fourth flight, but Gambrell was able to rebound to take the second set, then win a super-tiebreaker by a narrow 11-9 score.
BGSU enjoyed success at the bottom two flights, with a pair of wins in straight sets. Freshman Katia Babina lost a total of just five games in her victory over Bojana Murisic, improving to 2-0 in dual-match play.
At the sixth level, Menoff moved her dual-match singles record to a perfect 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Anja Mihaldinec.
The Falcons return to action with a pair of matches next weekend, playing at Ohio State on Saturday (Jan. 27) before meeting Youngstown State the following day at Shadow Valley in the Toledo area. The OSU contest concludes a four-match road swing to begin the dual-match season, while the YSU contest is the first of five-straight matches at Shadow Valley.
