BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team surrendered four-straight Nanook power-play goals en route to a 5-2 loss Friday evening inside the BGSU Ice Arena. For the night UAF went 4-for-9 with their man advantage, while the Falcons were held scoreless on five attempts.
"Give credit to Alaska, they came out and fore-checked well on us and put pressure on us," said BGSU head coach Scott Paluch. "We felt good after getting out of that 1-0 deficit in the start of the second period. I thought we maintained some pretty good play in the second period, but we just took too many penalties in the third period. I thought we had the game back in our favor and thought we could have gained some tremendous momentum after killing the first 5-on-3 and took another penalty. Penalties clearly hurt us tonight."
BGSU had an incredible opportunity just 1:30 into the contest as Jonathan Matsumoto skated around an Alaska defender, but was unable to get a shot off as he was hauled to the ground.
Three minutes later Trevor Hyatt grabbed a rebound and put it past sophomore Jimmy Spratt for a 1-0 UAF lead. The Hyatt goal was the lone tally of the first period as the Falcons were out-shot 13-1 in the first 20 minutes.
The Falcons' first shot of the second period took just 50 seconds, but also netted the Orange and Brown a goal as Jonathan Matsumoto beat Chad Johnson glove side. Junior Derek Whitmore assisted on the goal.
The very next shift Tommy Dee stole a Nanook pass and skated in on Johnson uncontested, beating him stick side. The Dee goal sent Johnson to the bench, who finished the night with one save, while allowing two goals against.
"It took one spark and Matsumoto made it happen," said freshman Tommy Dee. "He came down the right side and put it in the back of the net. A goal is the biggest spark you can give a team. We were the line to follow that and we just wanted to follow it up with a good shift, and it happened again."
UAF's Wylie Rogers was stellar in relief, stopping all 15 shots he faced in 38 minutes of action.
Braden Walls tied the score at two apiece with a power-play goal at 9:12 of the second for the final lamplighter on the second stanza.
With the game tied at 2-2 entering the third the Falcons took four straight penalties, including three in a three-minute span, giving the Nanooks two different 5-on-3 opportunities. The Nanooks made the Falcons pay, scoring three power-play goals in the third period alone.
Spratt made 37 saves in the loss, as the Falcons were out-shot 42-18 on the night.
Falcons and Nanooks will do it again tomorrow night inside the BGSU Ice Arena. Opening face-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
