TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team opened up the home portion of the spring schedule in style, recording a 7-0 victory over Youngstown State University Sunday (Jan. 28). The non-conference dual match was held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
The Falcons improve to 2-3 in duals, while the Penguins drop to 0-2 on the young season.
The Brown and Orange broke out to an early 1-0 match lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. At the top flight, sophomore Kelsey Jakupcin and junior Jenna Nussbaum lost only one game in their victory.
The duo of freshman Samantha Kintzel and soph Stefanie Menoff was victorious at the third flight, with an 8-5 win over their YSU opponents.
In singles play, the Falcons rolled to victory. In seven singles matches (including a match at the seventh flight that did not count in the overall dual scoring), every BGSU competitor won in straight sets, with no Falcon player losing more than four games.
Senior Ashley Jakupcin lost only one game at the top flight in her win over Gina Peretti, while Menoff won by an identical 6-1, 6-0 result at flight number five.
Kintzel (flight #2), Nussbaum (#3), Kelsey Jakupcin (#4), junior Andrea Volle (#6) and sophomore Libby Harrison (#7) all rolled to straight-sets wins as well, completing the 7-0 decision.
The Brown and Orange will continue a five-match homestand at Shadow Valley, taking on Duquesne on February 9. BGSU also will meet Xavier (Feb. 10) and Detroit (Feb. 11) that same weekend.
