TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team spotted visiting Duquesne an early 1-0 lead, but rallied back to take four of the six scored singles matches en route to a 4-3 win over the Dukes Friday night (Feb. 9). The non-conference dual match was held at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 3-3 on the season, while Duquesne drops to 2-1.
Junior Jenna Nussbaum clinched the match for the Falcons, breaking a 3-3 tie with her win at the third singles flight.
The Dukes had opened the match by taking the doubles point Friday night. DU won at the top-two flights, but Falcon sophomore Stefanie Menoff teamed with freshman Samantha Kintzel for an 8-0 whitewashing of DU's Alexandra Albano and Andrea Sailer at the third flight.
Duquesne again had success at the top-two flights in singles play, as DU's Johanna Bezjak and Jacqueline Hughes posted wins over Ashley Jakupcin and Kintzel, respectively. But, BGSU's team balance showed as the Falcons won at flights three through six to take the match.
Nussbaum won at the third flight, with a straight-sets win over Rebecca Poole in a match that was the last to finish and clinched the dual-match victory for the Brown and Orange. Nussbaum lost a total of just five games, while soph Kelsey Jakupcin dropped only four total games in a fourth-flight win over DU's Rachel McGowan.
At the fifth flight, freshman Katia Babina did not lose a single game, with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sailer. And, Menoff dropped only one game in her sweep of Alicia McNamara. Sophomore Libby Harrison and senior Erica Wolfe each won in non-scored singles matches vs. their DU foes.
Menoff now has a total of 21 wins on the season to lead the team, while Kintzel has 18 and Kelsey Jakupcin 15. Menoff has a record of 12-1 in singles play.
The Falcons continue a busy weekend at Shadow Valley with two more matches. BGSU will meet Xavier on Saturday (Feb. 10) in a 2:00 p.m. start, before facing Detroit Sunday (Feb. 11) at 1:00 p.m.
