ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Michigan (8-4-1) took advantage of a four-goal halftime lead en route to beating the visiting Bowling Green State University Falcons (3-8-3), 5-2 at the U-M Soccer Field on Wednesday night. BGSU's Cameron Hepple and Nathanyal Thomas each scored against the Blue and Maize in the effort.
For Hepple, fresh off a stint with the Bahamian National team, the goal was his third of the season and four career strike while Thomas' was his first as a Falcon. He is the eighth member of the current roster to net at least one tally in his rookie season and the third to do so this season.
U-M's Steve Bonell opened the Blue's scoring with defensive goals in the third and sixteenth minutes of the match while Steve Hecker (20:04) and Michael Holody (34:16) added additional success for the 4-0 lead to end the first period of play.
Hepple broke the ice for the Falcons by sinking a header into the left corner of the net at the 57:29 mark, but U-M put the match out of reach with their fifth and final score in the 75th minute of the match. Hunter Van Houten was credited with his second helper of the season on Hepple's play.
Thomas struck gold with less than five minutes of play remaining in the match by bending a ball past the leaping reserve keeper Tom Hulls into the upper right corner of the net. Senior Alec Perea aided Thomas on the play.
Paul Shoemaker finished the night with a pair of saves on seven on target attempts, while U-M used a combination of starter Patrick Sperry and Hulls as the last line of defense. The two stopped six shots on goal and each let in a goal.
The Falcons will now see the likes of No. 23 Akron on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The Mid-American Conference match-up will take place under the lights of UA's Lee Jackson Field.
