KENT, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University football team picked up a key win on the road, downing Kent State University by a 31-20 score Saturday (Oct. 20). The Mid-American Conference East Division game was held at Dix Stadium.
Some notes and numbers from the game ...
* Falcon freshman Willie Geter ran for 203 yards on 22 carries in the road win ... Geter shattered his previous bests in numerous categories.
* What are those categories? Well, Geter entered the game with season rushing totals of 16 carries and 87 net yards ... his previous high for carries in a game was seven at Boston College two weeks ago ... Geter's prior high for rushing yards in a game was 38, in the win over Western Kentucky.
* Geter entered the KSU game with a season-long run of 17 yards, but had several carries longer than that vs. the Golden Flashes ... he had a 20-yard run on the game's first play from scrimmage, but again, he was just getting started ... Geter had rushes of 27, 44 and 50 yards in the second half.
* Geter becomes the first Falcon to rush for over 200 yards in a game since P.J. Pope ran for 205 yards against Western Michigan on Nov. 6, 2004 ... Geter fell just 22 yards shy of the school single-game rushing record (225 by Darryl Story vs. Ball State, 1983).
* Anthony Turner scored two touchdowns in the Falcon win, one rushing and one receiving.
* Turner caught a 'throw-back' pass from Tyler Sheehan and raced 31 yards for a score midway through the third quarter ... for Turner, the reception was the first of his career, and obviously was his first collegiate TD catch.
* Turner gives the Falcons a total of three players on the current roster with rushing, passing and receiving TDs ... Turner joins Sheehan and Freddie Barnes with that distinction, and the Falcons are the only team in the country with more than one player to achieve that feat.
* On the game's opening drive, Sheehan found Corey Partridge for an 18-yard pass to the KSU 31-yard line on a third-and-9 play ... then, the sophomore QB found Barnes for a 20-yard gain to the Flashes' 4-yard line ... on the next play, Geter took it in for the score ... Geter gained 34 yards on four rushes in that opening drive.
* On KSU's first drive, Nick Torresso tackled KSU's Eugene Jarvis behind the line, for Torresso's first career tackle for loss.
* Sheehan found Geter on a screen pass on the first play of a BGSU second-quarter drive, for a gain of 21 yards ... later on that same drive, a fake field-goal resulted in the holder, Partridge, gaining two yards on a fourth-and-2 play to the KSU 12.
* Two plays later (after a nice catch by Marques Parks), Turner spun out of a would-be tackle and went in to the left corner of the end-zone for a score ... the TD was Turner's third rushing score of the year, most on the team ... the Falcons led, 14-6, with 4:23 left in a fast-moving opening half.
* The Falcons then nearly came up with an onside kick, after Nick Iovenelli's well-struck ball caromed off a KSU player ... but, the Flashes were able to come up with the ball, and KSU was able to drive for a late touchdown, cutting BG's lead to 14-13 at the half.
* In the third quarter, BG came up with the aforementioned Sheehan-to-Turner scoring play for the 21-13 lead.
* On the next drive, the Flashes' drove to the Falcons' 3-yard line, before a host of players -- including John Haneline, Cody Basler and D.J. Young -- stopped KSU's Andre Flowers on a fourth-and-1 rushing play.
* On the very next play, Geter took the handoff and went off right tackle for 50 yards into Kent State territory ... the Falcons did not score on that drive, but Geter was over 100 yards rushing for the first time in his Falcon career.
* And, on the first play of the Falcons' very next drive, Geter went around left end for 44 yards to the KSU 40 ... later on that drive, after a BGSU timeout, Sheehan found a wide-open Partridge for a 24-yard TD and a 28-13 lead with 10:14 left in the fourth quarter.
* The Falcons drove inside the BGSU 5-yard line yet again, but on another fourth-and-goal play, Diyral Briggs hit KSU quarterback Julian Edelman's arm as he prepared to throw, forcing an incomplete pass and giving BGSU the ball on downs.
* The home team scored with 5:35 left to cut the lead to 28-20 ... on the first play of the ensuing drive, Geter ran up the middle for 27 yards, and a KSU facemask penalty at end of play gave BG the ball at the Flashes' 32 ... that put the Falcon freshman over 200 yards rushing for the game.
* That BG drive stalled, but with 3:22 left, Sinisa Vrvilo hit a career-long 49-yard field goal to give the Falcons an 11-point lead ... Vrvilo's longest prior FG as a Falcon was 41 yards vs. Temple.
* With the Flashes trying to mount a drive, the Falcon defense came up with three sacks on as many plays ... Joe Schaefer credited with sack of KSU quarterback Darren Rogers on a second-down play ... on the next play, Rogers was sacked by Adrian Baker ... KSU was forced to take a timeout after each of those two plays.
* Then, on fourth-and-12, with a new KSU quarterback (Jon Brown) in the game, Angelo Magnone got to Brown for the sack, knocking the ball out of Brown's grasp in the process ... not only did Magnone force a fumble, he also recovered the ball, and the Falcons took a knee on three consecutive plays to close out the win.
* The Falcons' win gives BGSU the Anniversary Award ... BGSU and KSU, meeting for the 75th time, have played for the Anniversary Award since 1985.
* The Falcons now lead the overall series with KSU by a 53-16-6 margin, and BGSU has taken 18 of the 22 meetings since the inception of the Anniversary Award.
* BGSU won at Dix Stadium for the fourth consecutive time ... KSU's last home victory over the Brown and Orange came in 1999 ... BGSU is now 29-7-2 all-time in road games vs. the Flashes.
* This season, BGSU is now 4-3 overall and 2-1 against MAC East Division competition.
