MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Bowling Green State University sophomore Eddie Kipchoge (Eldoret, Kenya) took home Second Team All-MAC honors on Saturday morning, as he and the Falcon men's and women's cross country teams competed in the annual MAC Championships at the Riverwood Resort in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The Falcon men would finish eighth with a team score of 241, while the women finished seventh with a team score of 218 in the event hosted by Central Michigan University.
Kipchoge, who has paced the Falcon men all season, ran a time of 25:26.3 to finish 14th overall in the men's 8K race, as he finished just 53 seconds behind the race winner. Eastern Michigan's Josh Perrin would win the individual title with a time of 24:33, as the Eagles had three runners finish in the top five to claim their third-consecutive MAC team championship.
With Kipchoge's 14th-place finish, he becomes the first BG men's runner to earn All-MAC honors since Rogers Kipchumba earned Second Team honors in 2005, finishing in the 13th position.
Freshman Christopher Moody (Davidsonville, Md.) would be the second top-finisher for the Falcons, as he came in 53rd. Not too far behind would be the freshmen duo of Jesse Smuda (Deshler, Ohio) and Johnston Kirui, who would finish 57th and 58th, respectively.
Seniors Curtis Farnsel (Metamora, Ohio) and Kevin Kaighin (Orgeon, Ohio) finished their final MAC title races crossing the line in the 59th and 60th slots.
On the women's end, freshman Barbara Powers (Bowling Green, Ohio) would pace the Falcon women, as she came across the line in the 28th position. For Powers, it was the first time in her collegiate career that she has finished as BG's No. 1 runner, as she ran a time of 18:36.7 to finish just ahead of sophomore teammate Carly Bates (Palatine, Ill.), who came across the tape in the 32nd slot with a time of 18:42.7.
Miami University's Laura Neufarth would take home the individual title in the women's 5K, while the Ohio University Bobcats had three runners finish in the top 10 to claim back-to-back MAC team titles in the women's championships.
Finishing behind Powers and Bates for the Falcon women was freshman Ashley Fischer (Fremont, Ohio), who ran an 18:52.1 in her first MAC championships to finish in the 41st position. Senior Lyndi Springer (Celina, Ohio) would finish 58th and freshman Heather Conger (Euclid, Ohio) would finish 59th.
Rounding out the results would be junior Kara Butler (Okemos, Mich.) and junior Kylie Korsnack as Butler finished 67th, while Korsnack took home the 68th position.
The two squads will return to action when they take part in the Great Lakes Regional in Bloomington, Ind. The event hosted by Indiana University, will kick-off at 11 a.m.
